New Zealand Nationals will go ahead in 2020

Olympic Weightlifting New Zealand (OWNZ) recently announced through social media that New Zealand’s Nationals Championships will still be going ahead.

Before that though, Kiwi weightlifters will compete in the North & South Postal, which is an online event hosted by the OWNZ to replace the missed opportunities of the North and South Island Champs in 2020.

The OWNZ then clarified:

“Results from the OWNZ 2020 North & South Postal can qualify you for the 2020 National Championships! They will not however contribute towards national rankings or records.”

This is exciting news for all Kiwis looking to qualify for the NZ Nationals later this year.

OWNZ has decided to go big this year, holding Nationals at the Trustpower Baypark Arena in beautiful Mount Maunganui, about three hours south of Auckland.

Deciding to have the country’s Nationals in a major stadium complex makes a massive statement: they aren’t playing around anymore; they are ready to make some moves to put weightlifting on the map in New Zealand. Coupled with OWNZ’s partnership with SkySport Next and the Sport Collective, this year looks to be bigger than ever.

Allowing athletes to qualify by using an online competition can only strengthen OWNZ’s relationships with clubs and athletes, giving them as much opportunity as possible to succeed.
TWP will be heading over to cover all the ins and outs of the competition and athletes.
