Key changes, dates and info for AWF and OWNZ upcoming National events

by theweightliftingplatform

Last week, the Australian Weightlifting Federation (AWF) posted to Facebook detailing plans for this year’s National competitions.

It is starting to look promising that National events will take place later this year.

Interestingly, New Zealand and Australia have taken two very different approaches to forge ahead with their National events. The AWF has decided to enforce in-person competitions to qualify, while Olympic Weightlifting New Zealand (OWNZ) has opted for an online approach.

“At this stage, all AWF National Championships are intended to be face-to-face competitions conducted in the usual format, however the dates and/or format of AWF events are subject to the prevailing and predicted conditions and regulations relating to the COVID-19 pandemic applicable to all Australian States and Territories,” the post on the Victorian Weightlifting Association (VWA) Facebook page, signed off by Ian Moir, stated.

So, if restrictions do not get lifted by states and territories leading into the qualifying periods, we may see some changes to the format.

The OWNZ, however, has already attracted over 150 athletes to its North South Postal, which will — as an event that allows for remote entry — be unaffected by government restrictions. It is a direct qualifying event for New Zealand Nationals.
